Winter Camping Day Camp 2015

Our Stargazers had a little sledding fun...

while our older Juniors and Seniors got to work building a snow pit.

Once the pit was complete they learned how to build a fire in the snow.

They roped off the area we would be digging our snow shelter under to prevent anyone from walking over it and collapsing it.

The Navigators worked so hard digging and removing snow for hours.

Of course we took breaks for hot dogs...

and marshmallows.

It was so deep eventually, you couldn't even see the kids hard at work inside.

The completed shelter could hold 2 people.

Here is an amazing time lapse video of the whole process.

Winter Camping Prep

Last night we had our Winter Camping prep meeting.

We did some experiments with clothing by chilling a few bottles of hot water "dressed" in nothing, light clothing, warmer clothing and layers.  We packed them into a pot of ice.

We found that layers really do keep you warm.

Then we got some wiggles out with worm races.

Our Seniors and older Junior Navigators learned about the dangers of winter camping and how to properly dress.  They learned about building winter shelters and were divided into teams with roles and responsibilities for building our own snow shelters in our upcoming winter camping trip.

Our Stargazers had a blast building a "shelter" and reading books about how to dress properly in the winter.

We are READY for our Winter Camping Day Trip!
